Times are no different today than for our ancestors. If you are uninspired or restless in your career, listen. I am the daughter of Vikings and immigrants. As long as you give yourself permission to follow your heart. Seeing how different people are and how they evolve is beautiful. We crave innovation and disruption, some of us more than others. Monotone routines kill our interest and creativity. Humans are much too versatile and talented to limit themselves. In fact, I really wonder who thought humans were designed to be chained into one career for life. Quitting your job or switching careers midway in life does not mean failure at all. How many stories have you heard of famous people who appeared highly successful on the outside, but who end up in rehab for drug or alcohol abuse, or even some who took their own lives? Happiness always wins in the end over wealth and fame. “Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” -Tony Robbins What if you have the mansion, the car, the family, and all the perks already? Yet you don’t feel happy. What if you are successful? Maybe you have the dream job and others envy you. I’ll always remember how exhausted and sad she looked on weekends during my childhood. Settling at work or in your personal life means dulling your inner light, slowly killing your vitality, and turning you into a person who just “goes with the flow”, not your optimal self! My mom was a victim to this, slowly withering away at a job that paid the bills yet sucked her health right out of her and settling to be single just because she couldn’t bring herself to go after the relationship she deserved. Because life is too short to spend one more year in a position that doesn’t thrill you. Later, when you do take action, you will wish you’d done something sooner. Trust me that you can try to ignore the feeling, but it won’t go away. If you are nodding, I’m here to tell you to listen to your gut. Not a fun place to be it, I can assure you. I found myself fighting insomnia while all the questions swirled around in my head. Since so much of my time and effort had been tied to my career, this new doubt unsettled me deeply. At one point, I started questioning if this is what I wanted to keep doing. But unlike a child, it seems my love had limits. I considered my career almost like a child, one who needs constant attention and love. I was an ambitious workaholic and my career was of central importance in my life. ![]() I am well-placed to coach such stuck senior professionals because I once went through exactly that myself. Quitting a Great Job Was The Best Thing I Did ![]() It feels scary to have others depending on you or being judged for your decisions. Not to mention, they often have kids and bills. The people I coach are a bit more senior, so it is often a career they have invested quite a bit of their lives into. Will there be consequences for taking a career break? These aren’t new graduates with their whole lives ahead of them. Most of all, they felt scared because they have responsibilities. People who are at this crossroads often feel stuck, uncertain, and sometimes a bit guilty if they quit their jobs and ‘let their employer, colleagues, or clients down’. Pivoting into something new can be a tough decision. Or maybe they have taken a sabbatical or career break to raise kids yet feel restless. Their current job or business no longer gives them joy.
